Even though Samsung has 32% of the global smartphone market, followed by Apple, which has 12%,
Apple's iPhone 5s is proving to be much more popular than samsung galaxy s4 in Japan as the Apple took 12 of the top 20 slots compared to just one Samsung device.
The top selling Samsung device was a Galaxy S4 at 16th, behind two additional iPhone models: 64GB versions of iPhone 5s on au and NTT DoCoMo.
Apple dominated weekly sales rankings provided by Japan's BCN among the japan's three major carriers.
Now Apple holds 35% of smartphone market share in Japan in 3Q, 2013

The iPhone 5c secured two spots, fifth and sixth places, for its 16GB model from SoftBank and au/KDDI, respectively.
The remaining spots went to the iPhone 5s, ranging between the 16GB and 64GB models.
Apple, however, did not hold the tenth position as it went to a low-end Chinese device by ZTE.

The sales for the iPhone 5s was beneficial for carrier NTT DoCoMo, which originally declined to sell any of Apple's iPhones due to disputes over pre-installed apps.
NTT DoCoMo had been pushing Android phones from Sony and Samsung in an effort to resist Apple's refusal to allow preinstalled apps or carrier branding on its iPhones.

NTT DoCoMo encountered a loss of 3.2 million users to its competitors "KDDI" and "Softbank" within the last five years allegedly for not carrying the iPhone. The Japanese mobile carrier finally began to sell the iPhone this year and have done well as it held two spots in BCN's top 10 weekly sales chart.

Some representive at japanese mobile industry stated that "japanese customers don't seem to like phablet as much as korean does." and japanese like compact and luxurious design of apple iPhones."
"Ever since Japan's No. 1 carrier, NTT DoCoMo started selling iPhone this year, Apple's market share leaped tremendously in Japan."
