Thriller movie ‘Hwayi’ leads korean box office

“Hwayi: A Monster Boy” was the big winner at the Korean box office over the weekend, according to the Korean Film Council yesterday.
Featuring rising star Yeo Jin-gu as a boy raised to become the perfect criminal, “Hwayi” opened Wednesday on Hangul Day, a national holiday, garnering 1.2 million admissions over its first five days, with 719,446 admissions from Friday to Sunday alone.

Earning 5.5 billion won ($5.1 million) over the weekend, “Hwayi” took in almost half of all tickets sales.

Coming in second was director Lee Joon-ik’s “Wish” with 25.6 percent of admissions, or about 3.1 billion won. Since opening Oct. 2 it has made 11.9 billion won.

“Tough as Iron,” last weekend’s No. 2, fell to third with just 7.8 percent of total ticket sales.

This fall’s biggest hit, “Face Reader,” may have dropped to fourth, but it drew 120,000 admissions to bring its grand total past the 9 million admission mark.

The rest of the Top 10 went to non-Korean movies, led by horror film “The Conjuring” in fifth place.

Ron Howard’s racing movie “Rush” opened in sixth with 47,845 admissions. “Despicable Me 2” was seventh while “Monsters University” managed eighth.
