Black Friday Frenzy Online in Korea

Black Friday - the frenzied shopping day that follows Thanksgiving in the United States - has come to Korea in a big way.

Thanks to avid online shoppers increasingly flocking to foreign websites for Black Friday sales, local retailers are copying the tradition, and yesterday morning the hottest searches on the Naver and Daum web portals related to shopping.

ABC Mart, the nation’s largest multi-brand shoe boutique, said yesterday it had began offering discounts of up to 70 percent on foreign sneaker brands and 30 percent on popular winter boots.

The event continues until New Year’s Day, but the rush of traffic yesterday froze the website for a time.

The Japan-based casual-wear company Uniqlo also began offering discounts yesterday on their latest winter items, sales that will last for a month.

Cosmetics brands such as Missha and Tony Moly joined the discount tide, offering big cuts of up to 50 percent off.

Tony Moly’s sale lasted only yesterday while Missha’s continues through today.

Auction, an online marketplace, already launched its Black Friday discount events last Monday with up to 70 percent off some imported goods.

It dubbed its sale “a super chance to experience U.S.-style discounts at home.”

Not only is Auction offering similar discounts as American retailers, its website introduced the “one click” shopping feature.

In addition to allowing consumers access to a wide range of international companies, like Amazon and the Disney Store, now shipping can be taken care of in one step.

In the past, to save on shipping fees, many people would buy goods in America, then use a private shipping company to send their purchases to Korea.

Despite the growing number of Black Friday options in Korea, local consumers still flocked to Amazon.com, because of the local credit card company BC Card.

BC Card is offering free shipping to Korea for Amazon.com purchases made with its card for the next three months.

Gourmet kimbap market is growing in South Korea.

Kimbap is Korea's favorite food equivalent to hamburger or pizza in the U.S.
Gimbap, or Kimbap, is a popular Korean dish made from steamed white rice (bap) and various other ingredients, rolled in dried laver seaweed (gim/kim) and served in bite-size slices that many foreigners refer to incorrectly as Korean sushi.
Basic kimbap starts at 1500 won (about $1.25), and fancier versions with tuna, assorted vegetables or cheese for 2500 won. A deluxe roll with every topping available won’t break the bank at 3500 won, ($3.15).
Now many kimbap brands and restaurants that serve premium gourmet kimbap are popping up in korea, turning kimbap into something like gourmet cuisine that look elegant and cost a lot more too.
Menus like Apple kimbap, roasted chicken breast kimbap, premium korean beef kimbap at "kimpop",kimbap restaurant located at sinsadong in Seoul, provided with hefty priced tag which ranges between 6000 won($5.50)and 15000 won($14).
Many department store and distributors are opening up gourmet kimbap stores in their branch as well.

Some representive at cooking division of Hyundai department store stated “I think there is a huge opportunity in the better-kimbap niche that is not going to slow down any time soon.”
"But this might lead to price inflation of other products in Korea since kimbap is food that most of korean could afford to eat in daily life."

people are waiting in line in front of some gourmet kimbap store.

3 men indicted for blackmailing actress Han Hyo-joo

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office said Monday it indicted three men on charges of blackmailing actress Han Hyo-joo with photos she had taken years ago with her then-boyfriend.

According to the prosecutors, a 36-year-old man surnamed Yun and two 29-year-old men surnamed Hwang and Lee are suspected of threatening Han’s family with “photos of her private life.” The suspects said they would release the photos to the press unless the family paid them 400 million won ($376,825).

Lee is believed to have stolen the photos from the actress’s digital camera when he worked as Han’s manager.

“Earlier in the month, Han’s father received a demand for money,” said an official from Han’s agency BH Entertainment. “After Han assured (the family) that she had not done ‘anything that would cause problems,’ the family reported the case to the police.”

The agency said the photos that Lee stole were not related to Han’s privacy.

3 Korean actresses get suspended jail terms for drug abuse

Three female celebrities, including top TV actress Park Si-yeon, received suspended prison terms Monday for illegally taking the psychotropic drug propofol.

The Seoul Central District Court sentenced Park and two others -- Jang Mi-inae and Lee Seung-yeun -- to eights months in prison, suspended for two years, for taking the prescription drug for reasons other than its intended purpose.

The actresses were found guilty of receiving unnecessary treatments at several plastic surgery and dermatology hospitals located at the posh Gangnam district of Seoul to get the drug, which is commonly used during routine surgeries.

"The defendants frequently administered propofol once or twice a week, long before propofol was classified as a psychotropic drug," Senior Judge Sung Soo-je said in his ruling. "The court deems that they were already addicted to the drug."

The court also ordered the three to each pay a fine ranging from 3.7 million won (US$3,500) to 5.5 million won.

U.S. pop star Michael Jackson died after overdosing propofol, a powerful anesthetic commonly used during routine surgeries.

Experts say propofol abuse is growing because unlike other hospital sedatives, it is quick-acting and rapidly leaves the system. It is also known as a "milk injection" because the drug has a milky color.

A wedding party at Yemen witnessed a tragedy while the whole crowd was dancing to the tune of Psy's Gangnam Style.

A wedding party in Yemen turned into bloodyshed as three guests were shot and killed at the scene in the middle of a “Gangnam Style” dance party, Daily Mail reported on Friday.

Three victims who were among a crowd of wedding party guests dancing to the tune of Psy’s global hit “Gangnam Style” were shot with an AK-47, falling to the ground and bleeding to death.

The shot, however, was only a haphazard mishap as the person who opened fire actually meant to shoot it up in the air so as to crank up the party’s excitement.

It is customary in Yemen that people shoot guns at wedding parties to heat up the glee. Despite Yemen authorities’ effort to curb the convention, it has occasionally led to unexpected tragedies.

Crayon Pop's X-Mas concept outfits, similar to a Japanese girl group again?

Crayon Pop is ready to celebrate the Christmas!
Instead of helmets, Crayon Pop wore Stars for the Christmas tree outfit.
According to their agency Chrome Entertainment, the photo shoot for the girl’s upcoming carol song took place on 18th.
On 23rd, this adorable and cute X-mas costumes for their new holiday songs brought another controversy among netizens accusing it of copying japanese girl group,Momoiro Clover Z.
This was not frist time it happend as Crayon Pop was previously accused of ripping off Momoiro Clover Z's costume concepts last year.

Last Christmas season, Japanese girl group ‘Momoiro Clover Z’ advertised their holiday concert through a pamphlet with a picture of their member Ariyasu Momoka in a cute green christmas costume with a star on her head.

Below are some netizens's comment stating their opinions:
"I'd see it as problematic if Momoiro used that dress as a promotion concept but it's just one member who personally wore it... This would fit more under the title of same dress, different feel, not copying or anything. Holiday outfit concepts are all similar anyway, might as well call anyone who's wearing a Santa suit plagirizing."

"Let's draw a line... There needs to be a reason for criticism but this is just unnecessary."

" All Christmas outfits look the same, how is this controversial at all"

Meanwhile, crayon pop’s Christmas carol‘Goorismas’ will be released online on the 26th.

Some korean actors getting paid too much?

According to industry sources, some korean actors and actress are getting paid as high as USD 150,000 per episode.
This high star price tags is raising a problems regarding K-drama production and creating a buzz among korean netizens

Hallyu wave and the drama boom has put a lot of focus on casting 'top stars' for high prices and cutting costs elsewhere (staff pay) to be able to cast them. In the end, half of the production costs end up going towards paying the stars, an unnatural balance compared to American and Japanese productions.
Even if a drama flops, stars’ asking prices continue to soar. It’s not as though market theory applies, and those prices keep rising, defying logic. Even when a drama meets with crushing failure, hurting the production company behind it, a star’s fee still climbs.
These days, the production environment for dramas is sliding into extreme decline. Although the star fees rise, there is a rapid decrease in those willing to invest or enter into product placement agreements.

Furthermore, production costs are shooting up, and aside from a few exceptions, there are numerous dramas that pull in ratings less than single digits. For this reason, there are some outside production houses that produce one or two, then disappear.

In such a serious situation, K-movie and drama markets may fall into decline, giving rise to the argument that the drama industry is headed for crisis point.

Many drama PD of MBC,SBS,KBS insisting that High asking price of some of stars usually result in quality drop of K-dramas because they get to spend too much on casting those stars leaving them less money to invest on producion of drama itself.
